It appears that Madonna's efforts to adopt again in Malawi will indeed be successful.

A lower court had already blocked the process, citing that Madonna could not adopt four-year-old Mercy James, as the Material Girl is not a resident of Malawi.

The Malawian Supreme Court overturned the ruling, saying that Mercy, who lives in an orphanage, would have a better life.

Hmmmm... The Mamas are sure that Madonna's personal wealth of an estimated $500 million had NOTHING to do with this change of heart.

What do you think? Should Madonna have been allowed to adopt Mercy or not?

No! Nyet! Ixnay!

For starters, she didn't want this adoption enough to comply with Malawian law... secondly, the child has family and true compassion would have been to provide for her security and welfare... as mother to an internationally adopted child I constantly grapple with the reality that I "took" my daughter from her culture and her ethnic background... in her case, she had no family, no one to speak for her, to love her or support her... she was a true orphan and it was a great gift to me to be allowed to to be called her mother.

Don't tell me that, in friggin' Africa, Madonna couldn't find a child with the same circumstance...

I understand that she loves Mercy and yes, the child will probably have a life of untold goodies and red string bracelets... still doesn't make it the morally correct act.

I'm all for adopting actual *orphans* and providing them with a better life, particularly when the parents in question would be otherwise childless.

In the case of Madonna and Angelina Jolie, though, there is no problem with fertility. There is some question as to their ability to maintain long term relationships. I'd like to see some more evidence of their ability to stick to someone through thick and thin before anyone hands over more children for them to raise.

Because cute cuddly babies grow up into big gruesome teenagers. Whom you can't divorce.

In the meantime, I'd love to see these wealthy celebrities set up foundations to cover the cost of adoptions for otherwise childless couples who can't afford the $20,000 it costs to adopt internationally.

I can't help but have this suspicion that Madonna loves drama and the thrill of the chase. Now that she can adopt little Mercy, my black heart queasily suspects that raising Mercy may pale to the fun of bending Malawian law all the way to its Supreme Court.

Just for the record, I don't hate Madonna at all but I do think she's a major piece of work!
